There was a Virginian homeschool family in the 80's whose kids hid under the beds to escape being taken by the truant officers..on a regular basis. This family was taken to court. They fought for the right to teach their own kids. Their oldest child, when he was 19 ran for leader of the republican party in their community. The next year he ran for a school board position. And won. Ironically, his position set the salary for the man that took their family to court.
*heard his mother speak at ICHE...the Illinois Homeschool convention yesterday

That sounds familiar. Didn't hide under the beds but we DID hide in the bedroom. Thankfully we didn't have to go to court. Somebody else fought that battle for us.
wow, i had no idea that this was a legitimate concern for homeschoolers. i'm pretty shocked! thanks for enlightening me, holly.
what year?
It was back in the 80's...These days the states differ in their control. Some states require homeschoolers to take standardized tests, others to have a certified teacher give oversight to the moms...etc. Here in IL we are free, though :-).
No way Heather! Was that the early years in Texas?
