Can Language Arts really be SOOOOO different in a Christian school than in the public school? Check out what a fourth grader could be reading..

"Where the Sidewalk Ends" is extremely popular for the upper primary grades.  Here's an awesome Christian alternative.  I've been reading with the kids, "When the Aardvark Parked on the Ark."  An evangelical pastor with a gift for words wrote this poetry book. I was happy to find a modern poet whose writing brings home spiritual and moral themes.  Many modern poets project liberal morals and an anti-God theme.  And yes, the absence of God is anti-God.  Calvin Miller is hilarious.  Not all his poems are on a religious theme, but some are.   Here's a funny one: "Daniel's Prayer." The poetry is geared toward primary grades and jr. high. ;')

Oh, God
I promise to obey your law
If all these kitties get lockjaw.
Please God, I'm frankly scared to death!
Don't let these cats get prophet's breath.
Amen.

Alternatively, there are the predatorial propaganda book lists like what you find among the Chicago Public Schools recommendations for your children:

Love, Jessica. Julián Is a Mermaid. Candlewick Press, 2018.

--A story of love, acceptance and a celebration of individuality as a young boy's Abuela embraces the fact that he wants to dress as a beautiful mermaid.

 Blake, Ashley Herring. Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World. Little, Brown and Company, 2018.

--Ivy is an artist, and a seventh grade girl, whose house is destroyed in a tornado. She survives a first crush on a girl, and realizes how much she is loved by her family and friends.

Gracefully Grayson by Ami Polonsky

--Grayson Sender has been holding onto a secret for what seems like forever: "he" is a girl on the inside, stuck in the wrong gender's body. The weight of this secret is crushing, but sharing it would mean facing ridicule, scorn, rejection, or worse. Despite the risks, Grayson's true self itches to break free. Will new strength from an unexpected friendship and a caring teacher's wisdom be enough to help Grayson step into the spotlight she was born to inhabit?

It Wasn't Me  by Dana Alison Levy

--When Massachusetts seventh-grader Theo’s self-portraits are vandalized with gay slurs in the student gallery, and someone destroys his long-exposure pinhole cameras shortly afterward, it seems that someone is out to get him.

Here's a Christian highschool literature reading list: Abi's 9th grade reading list.

Margin making: Simple Meals & Historic Films for School

Well I'm kicking in some simplicity this week, some margin as P. Shirer urged in her simulcast last weekend.  So, Sunday's pot of beans is this week's lunch burritos... and oatmeal/cold cereal only for bfast.  I'm thankful--Tbone came down with a fever yesterday and still today its high.  Goldenrod wasn't feeling well either.  I put on the old black & white film of William Penn for Rosebud (some great themes of conscience and religious liberty) and we called it a day for school.

Making margin for me means saying no to variety in food.  It keeps planning and making time to a minimum, creating time for more important things.

My Life Verse

“Enlarge the place of your tent,
stretch your tent curtains wide,
do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
strengthen your stakes.
3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
your descendants will dispossess nations
and settle in their desolate cities..."
(Isaiah 54:2-3)
